Operator History

Air Transport Command's North African Wing resulted from a split of the Africa-Middle East Wing in June 1943. It was responsible for moving aircraft, personnel and cargo to support the 12th & 15th Air Force. It operated the following routes:

  • Southbound, linking with the South Atlantic Wing: Casablanca to Roberts Field, Liberia via Dakar, French West Africa;
  • Eastbound, linking with the Middle East Wing: Casablanca to Cairo, Egypt via the Mediterranean coastal route;
  • Algiers, French Algeria to Naples, Italy.

It later added a northbound route from Casablanca to Great Britain.

On 1 July 1944, along with all other ATC wings, the North African Wing was upgraded to North African Division.
