Chittagong airfield was built in the early 1940's under the British rule. During World War II, it was used as a combat airfield, as well as a supply point and photographic reconnaissance base by the USAAF 10th Air Force during the Burma Campaign in 1944-1945. From the airport, Commandos of the 4th Combat Cargo Group flew supplies and ammunition which were air-dropped to the advancing Allied forces on the ground. At the end of June, control of the airport was returned to local authorities.
Today, the field has become an international airport that serves the city of Chittagong, the second largest in the country.
