Commando Operations
Lalmonirhat airfield was opened by the British forces in 1943 to support military operations in the East of India. It became a secondary Air Transport Command base, with links to Assam and Manipur, then under threat by Japanese forces. On 14 August 1945, Allied forces started leaving the airfield.
In 1958, after over a decade of abandon, an airline service was started in Lalmonir Hat, linking it to the then-East Pakistani capital Dhaka. The service met little success, the fare costing more than double the price of a train ticket, and it was closed in 1965. The airfield was then briefly used as a helicopter base by the Bangladeshi forces, and again in the 1980's an airline service was opened for short time. Since then, Lalmonir Hat has fallen into disuse.
As of 2018, plans were being made to reopen the abandonned airfield for airline use.
