Commando Operations
During the Chinese Defensive Campaign (1942-1945), the USAAF used Chungking's airfield, named Peishiyi (or Paishihyi), as a base of operations for its 14th Air Force. At the time, Chungking was in the Sichuan province and served as Chiang Kai-Shek's Republic of China's provisional capital city.
After the war, most of the Commandos left in China were gathered in Chungking and stored. Most of them ended up sold to the Republic of China Air Force in April 1946. The last USAAF personnel left the base in the following July.
Today, Chungking is called Chongqing, and it has split from Sichuan to become a municipality directly administered by the Chinese central government. The airfield, renamed Baishiyi AB, serves as a People's Liberation Army Air Force base while a new international airport was built for the town in 1990.
