Kunming airfield was originally built in 1923 under the supervision of a local warlord, General Tang Jiyao. It is among the oldest airports in China.
During the Sino-Japanese War, the airport was expanded. It was a base of operations of the legendary "Flying Tigers", the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force led by Claire Lee Chennault before the United States entered the war. Starting in 1942, Kunming airfield was the headquarters of numerous USAAF units, including the 14th Air Force and later the 10th Air Force. The Air Transport Command established a major air transport facility at the airport, which connected flights west to Chabua, Assam, India, with other routes within China.
