Commando Operations

Takoradi airport was originally built as a stop on Imperial Airways coastal African route. During World War II, it was used by the British Royal Air Force and the USAAF as a major stop on the trans-African route operated by Air Transport Command's Central African Wing, between Monrovia Roberts Field, Liberia and Lagos Apapa Airfield, Nigeria. The airport, named RAF Takoradi, saw major expansion during the war. Crated aircraft that had been shipped over the Atlantic, were assembled there prior to being flown to operational areas in North Africa. 26 Squadron SAAF was also based in Takoradi during World War II flying Vickers Wellington bombers on anti-submarine and convoy protection patrols over the Atlantic.
