Commando Operations

The airport was built in 1942 by the then Maharaja of Tripura, Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Debbarman. It had one primary runway, 05/23, which is now abandonned in favor of new asphalted runway 18/36. In late 1944, the airport was used by the USAAF 10th Air Force 4th Combat Cargo Group, flying Commandos which air-dropped pallets of supplies and ammunition to the advancing Allied forces on the ground in Burma.

Today, Agartala has become the third busiest airport in North East India.
