Commando Operations
Mohanbari airfield opened in March 1942 with rudimentary dirt runways. It soon became a major base for "Hump" flights operated by Air Transport Command's India-China Wing. During the monsoon season of 1942 (July to September), mud prevented flight operations and most transport units moved to nearby Chabua for the period. Engineers used that time to pave the runway using stone crushers.
After the war, Mohanbari returned to civilian use and is today Dibrugarh airport.
