Agra was built by American forces during World War II as a Royal Air Force station. From 19 March 1942, it became a major maintenance & supply base for the USAAF Air Materiel Command as the Agra Air Depot. Agra's 3rd Air Depot Group serviced a wide variety of fighters, bombers and transports used by 10th and 14th Air Forces on the China-Burma-India theatre. The depot stockpiled large amounts of material for shipment over the Himalayan Mountains by Air Transport Command cargo aircraft flying to forward airfields in China. It also was a major stopover point on the ATC Karachi to Kunming air transport route.
Air Transport Command left the Agra in December 1945, and the USAAF closed its base altogether in May 1946. Today, Agra is an Indian Air Force airbase as well as a civilian airport.
