Commando Operations
Sookerating was built by the RAF in 1942, and served initially as a fighter base to defend the Assam Valley against Japanese forces advancing from Burma. From late 1944, the airfield became an auxiliary field to Chabua. From 1944, it became a major transport base for the 10th Air Force and Air Transport Command's India-China Wing (later Division). From the airfield, numerous Commandos flew east into China over "the Hump" to resupply Allied forces there.
It is now a secondary airport for the Indian Air Force, which operates much more actively from other air bases in the region.
