Camp Kearny
Commando Operations
Camp Kearny served as a US Army camp during World War I and was shut down in 1920. Before World War II broke out, Camp Kearny was renovated and a runway was built in 1940. During the war, Camp Kearny and later NAAS/MCAS Miramar welcomed both Navy and Marine Corps Units. It became home to Fleet Marine Force Training Center, West Coast and the 2nd Marine Division, charged with defending the California coast.
