Dobbins AFB
Commando Operations
Rickenbacker Field was built in 1941. After the war broke out, Bell announced on 23 January 1942 that they would build a factory there. The USAAF took over the field on 19 February 1942 and changed its name to Marietta AAF. Marietta served as a bombardment training field during the war, while the Bell factory produced B-29 bombers.
Post-war, Marietta AAF became an air force base and was eventually renamed Dobbins AFB. The aircraft factory closed until the Korean War, when it was taken over by Lockheed. Dobbins then remained essentially a reserve base, which it still is today.
