Commando Operations
Elmendorf Field was built near Anchorage, AK from June 1940. During World War II, it housed the headquarters of 11th Air Force and played a major role in supporting the Aleutian Campaign against the Japanese. In December 1945, the 11th Air Force became the Alaskan Air Command, still based at Elmendorf.
