Homestead AAF was home to the Air Transport Command's 2^nd Operational Training Unit (2 OTU), and several Commandos were based there for crew training. The base was inactivated in December 1945 after receiving major damage from a hurricane three months earlier. It reopened only in 1955 as a Strategic Air Command base.
