Moffett Field was opened in 1933 as a Navy base. In 1939, NACA opened the Ames Research Center at Moffett, its second research laboratory. Ames mission was to conduct wind-tunnel research on the aerodynamics of propeller-driven aircraft. Ames used a Commando for deicing research during World War II.
