NAS Norfolk
Commando Operations
A naval station was built at Norfolk as the USA entered World War I in 1917. However, it was not until 1939 that runways and a formal naval air station were built there as well. Ramps were also constructed, for seaplanes to be operated by the Navy during the war. About 400 acres was acquired and, by 1943, the air station had become a central airfield for operations.
In March 1946, Naval Base Norfolk and NAS Norfolk were designated as separate installations.
Today, Norfolk is the largest naval base in the world, and its air station is still active.
