NAS San Diego
Commando Operations
NAS San Diego was commissioned in 1917, and is considered the birthplace of naval aviation.
During World War II, NAS San Diego was the major continental US base supporting the operating forces in the Pacific. Those forces included all Commando-operating Marine Corps units deployed in the Pacific theatre.
NAS San Diego was renamed NAS North Island in 1955.
