Presque Isle AAF
Commando Operations
Presque Isle airfield was appropriated by the USAAF at the beginning of World War II. It was turned into a base for opening the North Atlantic route due to link the USA to Great Britain. Presque Isle housed the headquarters of 23rd Ferrying Wing (later ATC North Atlantic Wing) until 1 January 1944, and was designated as the embarkation base for the North Atlantic route.
Presque Isle AFB closed in 1961 and the airfield became a civilian airport.
