Standiford Field
Commando Operations
Standiford Field was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1941 on a parcel of land south of Louisville, KY. During World War II, Curtiss-Wright built a plant on the airfield, which built 450 Commandos. The field remained under USAAF control until 1947, when it was turned over to the civilians and renamed Louisville International Airport. Most of the airline traffic, which had been operating out of Bowman Field, switched to Louisville International. Scheduled jet flights began in early 1962.
Today, the airport handles mainly cargo flights.
