Stout AAF
Commando Operations
Stout Field was built in 1926 as en enroute stop for transcontinental flights.
When World War II came about, most civilian traffic had already moved to the newer Indianapolis International Airport, and the USAAF started leasing the airfield from the state. Stout became a training and military transport base, as the headquarters for I Troop Carrier Command. Elements of the Central (later Eastern) Technical Training Command were also located there.
After the war, the land was declared too small to build runways suitable for the new jets, and activity at Stout wound down until air operations stopped in 1960.
