Operator History

LAPA was formed on 30 August 1960 and obtained an AOC to fly charters to any destination in Latin America. It acquired a first Commando in August 1960 from Transamerican Air Transport, and a second one in 1963 from that same airline after it went bankrupt. A Lockheed Starliner was added to the fleet in 1964, but the company ran into financial difficulties and ceased operations in September 1965. An attempted resurrection in March 1966 was thwarted when a newly-acquired Lockheed Super Constellation crashed during its delivery flight with a load of contraband cigarettes. All of the company's licenses were revoked after that accident.
