Operator History

US Airlines started in late 1945 by applying to the CAB for a license to operate the Boston - New York - Atlanta - New Orleans cargo route. Between 1946 and 1947, a rates war erupted between the non-scheduled and scheduled cargo operators, leading to CAB involvement. A total of 14 airlines received temporary operating certificates in May 1947, with only 6 remaining by the end of 1948 despite the introduction of a minimum cargo rate in April 1948. US Airlines received one of the 14 certificates in May 1947, but later shut down its operations until April 1948, thereby allowing it to survive the rates war. Using a fleet of leased Commandos, it became one of the 4 remaining all-cargo carriers certificated on 12 August 1949.

Scheduled cargo operations were stopped in June 1951, by the airline continued on-demand New York - Miami flights and also operated USAF contracts until May 1952. Bankruptcy proceedings started after the following three accidents plagued US Airlines:

  • 2 May 1952: N1385N in Goose Bay, NL
  • ...
  • ...

US Airlines certificate was withdrawn by the CAB in April 1955.
