VMJ-953 was activated on 1 February 1944 at Camp Kearney, CA. On 2 May 1944, it was transferred to Corvallis, OR, and redesignated VMR-953 on 17 July 1944.

Active deployment came on 18 August 1944, with the squadron's ground echelon arriving at MCAS Ewa, HI. The flight echelon arrived on 30 September 1944, and operations started with flights extending into Pacific combat areas including Leyte in December 1944 and Okinawa in May 1945.

VMR-953 was disestablished on 31 May 1947.
