Air Transport Command's 3rd Operational Training Unit (3 OTU) was created in 1942 at Rosecrans Field, MO with the mission of training flight crews to high-altitude operations. It moved to Reno AAF, NV on 7 June 1943. The unit operated many Commandos, which was a common type crews would later fly over the Himalayas.
