Operator History

The 145th Air Transport Squadron (Medium) was allotted to the Ohio Air National Guard (ANG) in early 1956 and received federal recognition on 17 March 1956. It was based at Akron-Canton, OH, where a fighter-bomber squadron was to be based initially, until the runway was found to be too short for them. The 145th was initially equipped with a fleet of Commandos and assigned to the 121st Fighter-Interceptor Wing of the Ohio ANG.

On 1 July 1958, the squadron was redesignated 145th Aeromedical Transport Squadron (Light) and re-equipped with Fairchild C-119J Flying Boxcars fitted for the aeromedical transport of personnel to medical facilities. From 1961, the unit was turned into an air refueling squadron flying KC-97 and later KC-135s Stratotankers.
