Operator History
In October 1955, the West Virginia Air National Guard organized the 130th Air Resupply Squadron at Kanawha County Airport. Its fleet of HU-16 Albatross and C-46D Commandos were used primarily for Air Commando missions. It was one of four new ANG units countrywide tasked with secret special operations missions formed that year at the request of the USAF and the CIA. The creation of those units marked the debut of the special operations mission in the ANG.
The arrival of additional types of aircraft also added versatility to the ANG’s special operations capabilities. The C-46D's were phased out in 1958 in favor of the Albatross and the Flying Boxcar. The Squadron was redesignated 130th Troop Carrier Squadron on 10 October 1958.
