Operator History

The Group was established on 10 May 1949 and first activated at Memphis Municipal, TN on 26 June 1949 as part of the reserve. It performed reserve troop carrier training under the supervision of the 2584th Air Force Reserve Training Center in Memphis until April 1951. It entered active duty the same month and assumed responsibility for operating and maintaining the USAF portion of Memphis Municipal Airport, and participated in tactical exercises and worldwide airlift. The Group converted from the Commando to the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar in 1952. It was replaced in its role by the 463rd Troop Carrier Wing in January 1953 and inactivated.

The Group was later reactivated in July 1962 at Dyess AFB, TX.
