Operator History
The 86th Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium was renamed from 86th Troop Carrier Squadron in June 1949 during the military buildup leading to the Korean War. The squadron had its origins in World War II, during which it conducted airborne assaults on Normandy, Southern France, Holland, and Germany using Douglas C-47 Skytrains.
From 1949, the squadron converted to the Commando, and its history pretty much follows the one of its parent 437th Troop Carrier Group. The squadron was inactivated just before the Korean War on 1 August 1950. It was reactivated on 26 January 1951, and operated Fairchild C-119's from Japan, seeing action in the Munsan-Ni, Korea airborne drop, before being deactivated on 10 June 1952.
