Commando Operations

At the beginning of World War II, the RCAF had a station at Blatchford Field in Edmonton, AB. Due to the increasing military traffic and the need for a staging base for its Air Transport Command Alaska operations, the USAAF opened another airfield a few kilometers away in Namao, AB. The United States Army Corps of Engineers built two runways at the base, both 2,100 meters long and Canada's longest at the time. USAAF ATC Alaska Wing ran this new airfield and established it headquarters there.

After the war, the USAAF handed control of the field over to the Canadians. RCAF Edmonton, still located at the old Blatchford Field, developed severe limitations and so all RCAF Squadrons and support units were transferred to the "new" RCAF station Namao on 1 October 1955. Blatchford Field was turned over to the Edmonton municipal government and became a commercial airport. In 1994, RCAF Namao was renamed CFB Edmonton.
