Commando Operations
Del Valle AAB was activated on 19 September 1942 on a 3,000-acre piece of land leased from the city of Austin. The name of the base was changed to Bergstrom AAF on 3 March 1943. During World War II, Bergstrom became a major training center for I Troop Carrier Command.
In 1948, Bergstrom was renamed Bergstrom AFB and operated under the Strategic Air Command and Tactical Air Command at various times. In 1966, it became the headquarters of the 12th Air Force. The military closed the base in 1993, and the city of Austin turned it into an international airport soon afterwards.
