Davis-Monthan Landing Field opened in 1925 as the largest municipal airport in the United States. The USAAC established a heavy bomber base there in 1940.

The base is most famous for being the US Armed Forces' largest aircraft boneyard. Tucson, AZ was chosen in 1946 as a military aircraft storage site because of its low humidity, alkaline soil and high altitude, factors which reduce corrosion.
