Commando Operations
NAF Litchfield Park was built in 1941 to serve a US Navy plant located there, on land donated by the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation. Later upgraded to a Naval Air Station, Litchfield Park became after the war the Navy's largest aircraft storage facility. Several Commandos were stored there after being retired from active service. Most if not all of them had been either broken up or sold off to civilian users by the early 1960's.
In 1965, the 500 Navy aircraft still stored at NAS Litchfield Park were transferred to MASDC at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ. The base was decommissioned and became the Phoenix-Gooyear general aviation airport in 1968.
