CCA (California Central Airlines)
Operator History
CCA was founded as Airline Transport Carriers Inc. in 1947 by Colonel Charles C. Sherman and his wife. The non-scheduled airline started operating what was, in effect, a scheduled service between Oakland and Burbank, CA, and the CAB soon ordered them to stop following the January 1958 crash of one of their DC3s. Sherman started CCA on 2 January 1949 on Airline Transport Carriers ashes, this time with proper CAB authorizations, and the airline prospered for a few years until it ran into financial losses that forced it to close down in 1954 after introducing the Martin 2-0-2.
Airline Trainsport Carriers Inc. was reformed with a similar plan in 1957, operating both as California Central and California Hawaiian. It operated scheduled passenger services between California's main cities and also to Hawaii with a fleet of DC3s, DC4s, Commandos and Constellations. The CAB refused to extend CCA's supplemental carrier certificate in October 1962, and the airline was shut down.
