The Group was equipped with Douglas C-39's (impressed DC2's), C-47 Skytrain and C-53 Skytroopers. After training in the continental USA, the Group ferried to the UK and deployed in North Africa in November 1942, now operating as the 62nd Troop Carrier Group, assigned to the Twelfth Air Force, 51st Troop Carrier Wing. The Group fought in the North Africa and Italy campaigns, and was eventually inactivated in Naples, Italy on 14 November 1945.
The Group was reactivated on 7 September 1946 at Bergstrom AAF, TX, now operating an all Commando fleet. The unit was briefly assigned to the Third Air Force, and then to the Ninth Air Force. It participated to various humanitarian relief operations in the USA, before transitioning to the Fairchild C-82 Packet in 1947. The unit was redesignated 62nd Troop Carrier Group, Medium on 23 June 1948.
The 62nd Troop Carrier Group was composed of three troop carrier squadrons, which were equipped with Commandos in 1946-1947:
