Operator History

The 3rd Ferrying Squadron was first activated on 7 March 1942 at Pope Field, NC. On 15 May 1942, the squadron moved to Karachi, Sindh, India and two days later to New Malit Cantonment, India. Two months later, the squadron was shipped to Chabua, Assam, India. There, the squadron was part of the 1st Ferrying (later 1st Transport) Group, 10th Air Force, and later the India-China Wing, Air Transport Command. It was redesignated as the 3rd Transport Squadron on 24 March 1943.

The 3rd flew air transport missions over the "Hump" into China in support of the 14th Air Force, using the Commando. Extensive losses of aircraft and personnel were suffered while supporting ground forces, including the air supply operations for General Stilwell's beleaguered forces in northern Burma in 1942. The 3rd Transport Squadron was disbanded on 1 December 1943, but its equipment & personnel kept on operating as Station 2 & 6 (Chabua).
