Commando Operations

George Field was built at the onset of World War II as a military training airfield. Training started there in August 1942 under USAAF Training Command. In the summer of 1944, an increasing need for combat cargo pilots led to the transfer of George Field to I Troop Carrier Command. Training was done initially on the C-47 Skytrain, but switched to the Commando in February 1945. Training at George Field came to a halt in September 1945. The airfield was turned over to ATSC (Air Technical Service Command), whose mission was to remove all usable military equipment from the property and dispose of items which no longer had a useful need.

George Field subsequently became a general aviation airport in 1948.
