The wing was first activated at Birmingham Municipal, AL in June 1949 as the 514th Troop Carrier Wing. It trained under the supervision of the 2587th Air Force Reserve Training Center. Only four months after activation, it moved to Mitchel AFB, NY.
At Mitchel, the wing trained under the supervision of the 2233rd Air Force Reserve Training Center until it was mobilized for the Korean War in May 1951. The wing was one of six Commando wings mobilized for the Tactical Air Command. These wings formed the basis for the formation of the 18th Air Force. It served on active duty at Mitchel until inactivated in February 1953.
The wing was again activated in the reserves in April 1953 and, again, trained under the 2233rd AFRTC. From August 1954, Commandos were phased out in favor of the C-119 Flying Boxcar.
The Wing was composed of the following squadrons (only those operating Commandos are listed):
- 335th Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium (June 1949 to April 1959)
- 336th Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium (June 1949 to April 1959)
