Smith Super 46C Commando

Variant

1958 civilian conversion.

Over 30 C-46A, C-46D, C-46E and C-46F converted.

Description

Back in April 1956, L. B. Smith Aircraft Corporation and Air Carrier Engineering Services of Miami, FL had obtained CAA approval for a civilian conversion of the Commando dubbed CW-20T. However, in 1957, Riddle Airlines designed its own and hugely successful Commando conversion, the C-46R. Smith retaliated with an updated version of the CW-20T which it called the Super 46C. Supplemental type certification was obtained in 1958, with VARIG as the first customer.
